If confirmed, this signal could stem from a decaying sterile neutrino of a mass of 7.1 keV. Such a particle could make up all the dark matter, but it is not clear how it was produced in the early Universe. In this letter we show that it is possible to discriminate between different production mechanisms with <ce:italic>present-day</ce:italic> astronomical data. The most stringent constraint comes from the Lyman-<ce:italic>α</ce:italic> forest and seems to disfavor all but one of the main production mechanisms proposed in the literature, which is the production via decay of heavy scalar singlets. Pinning down the production mechanism will help to decide whether the X-ray signal indeed comprises an indirect detection of dark matter.</ce:simple-para></ce:abstract-sec></ce:abstract></head><body><ce:sections><ce:section id="se0010" role="introduction"><ce:label>1</ce:label><ce:section-title id="st0020">Introduction</ce:section-title><ce:para id="pr0010">A dream of particle physicists, cosmologists, and astrophysicists is to discover the true nature of dark matter (DM), which makes up more than 80% of the matter in the Universe <ce:cross-ref refid="br0010" id="crf0100">[1]</ce:cross-ref>. The generic candidate is a Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP), i.e. a heavy particle which interacts as weakly as neutrinos. However, the many recent attempts to directly detect such a particle <ce:cross-ref refid="br0020" id="crf0110">[2]</ce:cross-ref> or to produce it at colliders <ce:cross-ref refid="br0030" id="crf0120">[3]</ce:cross-ref>, as well as the hunts for its annihilation products <ce:cross-ref refid="br0040" id="crf0130">[4]</ce:cross-ref>, have so far not found a clear indication. In this situation, the detection of an X-ray line in several galaxy clusters and in the Andromeda galaxy <ce:cross-refs refid="br0050 br0060" id="crs0010">[5,6]</ce:cross-refs> has attracted the attention of the community. This line, if stemming from DM decay, could be a smoking gun signal for a very different type of DM particle: an extremely weakly interacting (“sterile”) neutrino with a mass smaller than that of a WIMP by about seven orders of magnitude. WIMPs are produced by <ce:italic>thermal freeze-out</ce:italic> <ce:cross-ref refid="br0070" id="crf0140">[7]</ce:cross-ref> which means that they decouple from the primordial thermal plasma as soon as the Hubble expansion becomes larger than the interaction rate. Sterile neutrinos with keV-masses cannot be produced in this way because their interactions are too weak. However, even very feebly interacting particles can be gradually produced in the early Universe <ce:cross-ref refid="br0080" id="crf0150">[8]</ce:cross-ref>. For sterile neutrinos this can be achieved by their tiny admixtures <ce:italic>θ</ce:italic> to active neutrinos, the so-called Dodelson–Widrow (DW) mechanism <ce:cross-ref refid="br0090" id="crf0160">[9]</ce:cross-ref>, but this is known to produce a too hot spectrum <ce:cross-refs refid="br0100 br0110" id="crs0020">[10,11]</ce:cross-refs>, i.e., too fast DM particles. However, active-sterile neutrino transitions could be resonantly enhanced if the background medium carries a net lepton number. This production proposed by Shi and Fuller <ce:cross-ref refid="br0120" id="crf0170">[12]</ce:cross-ref> seems in a better shape when confronted with data <ce:cross-ref refid="br0130" id="crf0180">[13]</ce:cross-ref>, and it has been recently advocated to be able to produce DM in agreement with the line signal <ce:cross-refs refid="br0140 br0510" id="crs0100">[14,15]</ce:cross-refs>.</ce:para><ce:para id="pr0020">What is the status of the 3.5 keV line? Refs. <ce:cross-refs refid="br0050 br0060" id="crs0030">[5,6]</ce:cross-refs> have independently reported evidence in samples by the XMM-Newton and Chandra satellites from nearby clusters and the Andromeda galaxy (stating &gt;4σ significance for the stacked signal). These findings were criticised by Refs. <ce:cross-refs refid="br0150 br0160" id="crs0040">[16,17]</ce:cross-refs>, who state that Chandra should see a line signal from the center of the Milky way and that other chemical lines are able to explain the signal. However, these remarks were again criticised in Refs. <ce:cross-refs refid="br0170 br0180 br0190 br0200" id="crs0050">[18–21]</ce:cross-refs>, arguing that the centre of the Milky Way is too noisy for a clear signal. Ref. <ce:cross-ref refid="br0180" id="crf0200">[19]</ce:cross-ref> questions the range of validity of the background model assumed in <ce:cross-ref refid="br0160" id="crf0210">[17]</ce:cross-ref>. Finally, Ref. <ce:cross-ref refid="br0210" id="crf0230">[22]</ce:cross-ref> has found no signal in stacked XMM-Newton data from dwarf galaxies, which they claim should provide a clean signal, although the constraint provided is not significantly more stringent than previous ones <ce:cross-ref refid="br0220" id="crf0220">[23]</ce:cross-ref>. Obviously the situation is not clear at the moment and more data is required. On the other hand, the technical development of satellites proceeds slower than one would like, so that we cannot expect to see a very bright signal where none had been seen before. Ultimately, we should take the tentative 3.5 keV line as a motivation to scrutinize both the signal and its implications – the latter we will do here.</ce:para><ce:para id="pr0030">With the signal taken seriously, to find out whether DM decay causes it, non-standard production mechanisms must be tested. If the sterile neutrino was charged beyond the SM gauge group [see <ce:cross-ref refid="br0230" id="crf0250">[24]</ce:cross-ref> for a review of several such settings], freeze-out may be revived if a significant amount of entropy is produced to dilute the abundance <ce:cross-ref refid="br0240" id="crf0260">[25]</ce:cross-ref>, but this is strongly constrained by Big Bang Nucleosynthesis <ce:cross-ref refid="br0250" id="crf0270">[26]</ce:cross-ref>. However, there is another production mechanism which is in a better shape, using a scalar that decays into sterile neutrinos: S→νsνs. This scalar could be the inflaton <ce:cross-ref refid="br0260" id="crf0280">[27]</ce:cross-ref> or a general singlet <ce:italic>S</ce:italic> that is thermally produced in the early Universe by either freeze-out <ce:cross-ref refid="br0270" id="crf0290">[28]</ce:cross-ref> or freeze-in <ce:cross-ref refid="br0280" id="crf0300">[29]</ce:cross-ref>. Ultimately the production mechanism has an impact on the DM velocity profile and thus on structure formation.</ce:para><ce:para id="pr0040">In this letter we present a snapshot of an extensive study to be available soon <ce:cross-ref refid="br0290" id="crf0730">[30]</ce:cross-ref>. We show that, contrary to common believe, sterile neutrino production by scalar decays seems to be in better agreement with data than Shi–Fuller production, in particular when looking at the Lyman-<ce:italic>α</ce:italic> (Ly-<ce:italic>α</ce:italic>) bound. The fact that they exhibit very different suppression scales illustrates the strong effect the momentum distribution, and thus the production mechanism, has on particle free-streaming. DM candidates in the keV mass range can either act as cold, warm, or hot DM, depending on their average momentum and their distribution. For this reason it is crucial to know the details of particle production to constrain sterile neutrino DM.</ce:para><ce:para id="pr0120"><ce:cross-ref refid="fg0020" id="crf0770">Fig. 2</ce:cross-ref> clearly illustrates the power of the Ly-<ce:italic>α</ce:italic> method to discriminate different DM scenarios. The non-resonant DW production of sterile neutrinos can be ruled out at high significance <ce:cross-ref refid="br0390" id="crf0480">[40]</ce:cross-ref>. More surprising is the fact that the resonant production mechanism seems to be in tension with the Ly-<ce:italic>α</ce:italic> data, too, while the scalar decay production mechanism is perfectly consistent. The tension is at the 2.5<ce:italic>σ</ce:italic> level and hence not strong enough to exclude the resonant scenario as the driving production mechanism. Moreover, there could be sources of error in both data and theory that have to be clarified before drawing any final conclusions. The Ly-<ce:italic>α</ce:italic> signal from high-redshift quasars gives the most stringent constraints and seems to disfavor all but one of the most named sterile neutrino production mechanisms, namely the production via scalar decay, while (non-)resonant oscillations of active into sterile neutrinos seem to be in tension with the Ly-<ce:italic>α</ce:italic> measurement. Indeed, production via the decay of heavy scalar singlets seems in perfect agreement with the data and could remain as the only valid production mechanism if the 3.5 keV line observation is solidified.</ce:para><ce:para id="pr0210">Additionally, we showed that sterile neutrinos produced from decays at rest have an unusually cold momentum distribution. As a consequence, they are indistinguishable from cold DM at the relevant scales of dwarf galaxies, and do not contribute towards a solution of the highly contested <ce:italic>small scale problems</ce:italic> of ΛCDM.</ce:para></ce:section></ce:sections><ce:acknowledgment id="ac0010"><ce:section-title id="st0070">Acknowledgements</ce:section-title><ce:para id="pr0220">We thank Kevork Abazajian for useful discussions.
